optima_hd20_thumb.jpgOnce again Optima has raised the bar while lowing the price tag. Similar to the release of the HD 20 which brought the price of 1080 HD Projectors down to a reasonable point for the masses, the HD33 brings 1080p 3d projectors down to a realistic level for the average consumer. Priced at $1,500 as compared to most 1080p 3d projectors above $3,000.  Also similar to the HD20 is the lack of compromise that you have to make for the reduced price.

Once again Optima has raised the bar while lowing the price tag. Also similar to the HD20 is the lack of compromise that you have to make for the reduced price.

optima_hd_20.jpgThe HD33 sports a sleek look making it a welcome addition to your home theatre instead of an eye-sore that needs to be hidden or covered up. In the characteristic Optima White it has a design similar to the HD20 but with a slightly more extreme beveled edge adding a much more airstreamed look that has become so popular with more modern day electronics. The largest downside to this projector is the lack of a Lens Shift, so where you mount it becomes very important to your experience. With its impressive design however, you don’t have to worry about it being on prominent display. Hiding in the ceiling, not necessary.

The 2d aspects of the projector leave nothing wanting, the 1800 lumens seem almost too bright in many situations, which is a welcome relief. You can turn the lamp into standard mode, dropping the brightness if you have a good dark home theatre room and also increase your lamps life from 3000 to 4000 hours. The images are crisp and vivid, more so than most projectors. Children will love the extra bright colors, but this can be adjusted to be more “natural” if you wish. Even as just a 2d projector, the HD33 is a home run.

The strengths of the HD33 as a 3d projector are far greater than one would expect from a $1,500 piece of equipment. This machine does a fantastic job as an entry level 3d option while giving you the size of display needed to truly enjoy a 3d experience. Some people may experience the Rainbow effect, though it was drastically less noticeable than other projectors anywhere in the same price range.

All things considered, when measuring price versus payoff the HD33 is a big win.

TECH2 LAKE HOUSE

th-channel7-370.jpgUPDATE - The exterior of the Technology Lake House is complete and we are now working on interior finishing and electronics.  Last year, San Francisco's Channel 7 ABC News ran a special video report on the construction progress of the Technology Lake House, and we expect them back for a follow-up soon.  Click HERE for a DLINK Live Video Feed with pan and zoom features (userid=user, no password, daylight hours only).

Ron Rosberg's current project home, the Technology Lake House, is currently under construction on the shores of Clearlake in Northern California.  Even though the house is a wireless demo house, we have installed more than seven miles of wires in the walls for dozens of flat panel TVs, speakers, control panels, and sophisticated lighting. So far, more than a dozen technology and fixture manufacturers have agreed to sponsor this project, which has been simmering in Ron's head since he attended the first CES show in New York in 1967.  The 7,500 square foot project (plus three existing rustic cabin guest houses) is being built on a five-acre Honeymoon Cove resort with 500 feet of beach directly across from Konocti Harbor Resort.  This summer retreat will host  technology gatherings annually, inviting Western states home builders, contractors, and technology consultants for a live open house showcasing the latest in home technologies.  There is room to park plenty of boats, so plan on coming up for some lake fun after the project is complete.  For more info, send email to ronald@usa.net, or call 707-995-2683.  To see the latest photos, visit Ron's Flickr gallery.

We are currently looking for products to evaluate in these areas:

  • Home automation: lighting, security, and entertainment
  • A/V technology for the 500 SF home theater media demo room

Hot News on Cool New Features: The ENTIRE front of the home is made of 21 sliding NanaWall glass panels that fold into the walls, opening the entire home up to the lake during demo days.
