Droid Razr: The Phone the Future Promised Us

Details
Category: Cell Phones
Written by Andrew Barrus

motorola_droid_razr_smartphone_icon.jpgThe Droid Razr is the newest Android powered smartphone in Motorola's arsenal with Big Red. Motorola's choice of the name Razr tells us quite a bit about their belief in this newest LTE Droid. The Razr was Motorola's flagship phone for years and still caries quite a bit of weight in the cellular industry with the Razr line having revolutionized mobile phones and still clinging to the title as the most sold flip phone. Motorola has sold over 130 million Razr flip phones over 4 years of production. The choice of the name Razr should be a sign that Motorola's got a new favorite in the smartphone race.

The Droid Razr is the newest Android powered smartphone in Motorola's arsenal with Big Red.

The phone has a 4.3 inch Super Amoled screen falling in line with other LTE handsets launching. The most impressive thing is that the Droid Razr is only 7.1mm thick, making it the thinnest LTE Smartphone to launch to date. The phone is incredibly thin, and is made to look it.  The small bump on the back for the camera is reminiscent of the Droid X and X2, though adds no feel of bulk to the phone. Someone finally got the form factor question right. The phone is thin in all the right ways, but still boasts an impressive screen with enough touch screen real estate to be a joy to use.

Though it may be super thin the Razr has a Corning® Gorilla® Glass covering its capacitive touch screen for increased strength, meaning less cracked screens. The phone has a Kevlar back keeping with the theme of strength without compromising look or size. The Razr also sports a water resistant coating within the phone, similar to what has been seen on other Motorola smartphones to help protect the gadget from accidental spills and splashes. Though not water proof or military grade the combination of these features creates a top of the line android phone that feels like a military grade phone.

Boasting an impressive duel core 1.2g processor and 1 Gig of ram the Razr comes out the gate made to do some heavy lifting. Proving that it has come far from its namesake predecessor. It has a impressive 1750 mAh batter claiming 12 hours of talk time. This battery coupled with what motorola is calling Smart Actions, a software to allow the end user to maximize batter efficiency by automatically performing tasks such as shutting of bluetooth when the phone reaches a GPS location or slowing down the processor when on a phone call, may be a bright light to those suffering from LTE battery woes.

droid_razr1.jpgThe Razr comes equipped with AN impressive 8 Megapixel rear facing camera with a 1.3 Megapixel front facing camera for video chatting goodness. The camera is able to record video in 1080p at 30fps and supports auto focus and flash. The phone has 16 gigs of internal memory and is supposed to ship with a 16g Micro SD Card as well for storing all your photos and media.

The Droid Razr will also be compatible with features such as MotoCast, the new re-branding of ZumoCast, allowing easy streaming of data between the device and your home PC or Mac. Motorola has announced a lapdock to launch for the device, though it will not work with the Bionic Lapdock. However, there is also word of a universal lapdock in the works that will work for both devices and in theory all future devices launch with Motorola's Webtop App Capability.

All things considered, the Droid Razr is the phone the future always promised us. Thin, fast, strong and with endless possibilities. I, for one, am excited that the future is here.

TECH2 LAKE HOUSE

th-channel7-370.jpgUPDATE - The exterior of the Technology Lake House is complete and we are now working on interior finishing and electronics.  Last year, San Francisco's Channel 7 ABC News ran a special video report on the construction progress of the Technology Lake House, and we expect them back for a follow-up soon.  Click HERE for a DLINK Live Video Feed with pan and zoom features (userid=user, no password, daylight hours only).

Ron Rosberg's current project home, the Technology Lake House, is currently under construction on the shores of Clearlake in Northern California.  Even though the house is a wireless demo house, we have installed more than seven miles of wires in the walls for dozens of flat panel TVs, speakers, control panels, and sophisticated lighting. So far, more than a dozen technology and fixture manufacturers have agreed to sponsor this project, which has been simmering in Ron's head since he attended the first CES show in New York in 1967.  The 7,500 square foot project (plus three existing rustic cabin guest houses) is being built on a five-acre Honeymoon Cove resort with 500 feet of beach directly across from Konocti Harbor Resort.  This summer retreat will host  technology gatherings annually, inviting Western states home builders, contractors, and technology consultants for a live open house showcasing the latest in home technologies.  There is room to park plenty of boats, so plan on coming up for some lake fun after the project is complete.  For more info, send email to ronald@usa.net, or call 707-995-2683.  To see the latest photos, visit Ron's Flickr gallery.

We are currently looking for products to evaluate in these areas:

  • Home automation: lighting, security, and entertainment
  • A/V technology for the 500 SF home theater media demo room

Hot News on Cool New Features: The ENTIRE front of the home is made of 21 sliding NanaWall glass panels that fold into the walls, opening the entire home up to the lake during demo days.
