Road Mice - The Most Toys Wins

Details
Category: Motorsports
Written by Bill Schumann
roadmice-police-tn.jpgThis Christmas, we managed to get our hands on a hot new gift item for any age or flavor of automotive enthusiast. "Road Mice" are American Muscle cars made to fit in the palm of your hand and serve as your mouse when you cruise the web.  They are fast (800 dpi) and fun, and are officially licensed for the hottest new cars, the Mustang GT, Camaro, Corvette, and more.

Yesterday's car guys have become major computer geeks in recent years as absolutely everything in the automotive industry has gone high tech. Therefore, the cross-over between cars and computers seems a natural fit, so leave it to a group of guys in California to come up with the newest "cross-over," a cool model car, a kids toy, and a computer accessory all in one.

The details on the Road Mice are incredible, and the construction is solid (not the thin cheap plastic you might find on many real mice).  The left and right mouse buttons are well-conceiled as perfectly fitting halves of the hood. The roller wheel on the mouse lights up red, and kind of looks like a hood scoop.  When you click on a mouse button, it lights up the blue LED headlight, an obvious nod to modern HID headlights.  To make the included batteries last longer, you can turn off the headlights (after the novelty wears off, I suppose).

We decided to give the Ford Mustang GT mouse to a guy that tunes Mustangs for a living, using a laptop computer plugged directly into the engine computer.  The "this-is-really-cool" smile was amazing!  Immediately, though he tried to operate the mouse on the hood of a shiny polished vehicle, and the optical mouse wouldn't behave.  So, our only feedback is that version two could probably use some sort of cool mouse pad to complete the package.

The Road Mice folks will be constantly unveiling new hot models, so check their website at www.roadmice.com to see what is available today.

TECH2 LAKE HOUSE

th-channel7-370.jpgUPDATE - The exterior of the Technology Lake House is complete and we are now working on interior finishing and electronics.  Last year, San Francisco's Channel 7 ABC News ran a special video report on the construction progress of the Technology Lake House, and we expect them back for a follow-up soon.  Click HERE for a DLINK Live Video Feed with pan and zoom features (userid=user, no password, daylight hours only).

Ron Rosberg's current project home, the Technology Lake House, is currently under construction on the shores of Clearlake in Northern California.  Even though the house is a wireless demo house, we have installed more than seven miles of wires in the walls for dozens of flat panel TVs, speakers, control panels, and sophisticated lighting. So far, more than a dozen technology and fixture manufacturers have agreed to sponsor this project, which has been simmering in Ron's head since he attended the first CES show in New York in 1967.  The 7,500 square foot project (plus three existing rustic cabin guest houses) is being built on a five-acre Honeymoon Cove resort with 500 feet of beach directly across from Konocti Harbor Resort.  This summer retreat will host  technology gatherings annually, inviting Western states home builders, contractors, and technology consultants for a live open house showcasing the latest in home technologies.  There is room to park plenty of boats, so plan on coming up for some lake fun after the project is complete.  For more info, send email to ronald@usa.net, or call 707-995-2683.  To see the latest photos, visit Ron's Flickr gallery.

We are currently looking for products to evaluate in these areas:

  • Home automation: lighting, security, and entertainment
  • A/V technology for the 500 SF home theater media demo room

Hot News on Cool New Features: The ENTIRE front of the home is made of 21 sliding NanaWall glass panels that fold into the walls, opening the entire home up to the lake during demo days.
